The challenge for Global Consumer Design was to create a gas range that would stand out in the market and become a leader in the cooking segment. The team had to strike a balance between innovation and traditional consumer habits, ensuring that the design would challenge mindsets without alienating potential buyers. Cost was also a significant consideration, requiring careful evaluation of each component and finish to meet both product development and financial goals.
The result is a gas range that not only meets the needs of Mexican consumers but also exceeds their expectations. Dragon features a 30" wide built-in and free-standing design, integrated oven, glass window, and cast iron grates. The product lineup includes versions with a glass lid, electronics, and various features tailored to the brand promise and the beliefs of Mexican consumers.
When it comes to production, Dragon utilizes a combination of materials such as stainless steel, enameled steel, aluminum, cast iron, glass, injected molded PBT, and pre-painted steel sheet. The production methods include die-cut cooktop and manifold, embossed side panels, injected handles, pre-painted steel sheet, floated tempered glass, and chromed oven rack.
Dragon's technical specifications include dimensions of L26" W30" H38" and a weight of 180.78 lb. The suggested retail price ranges from $700 to $1500 USD, making it accessible to a wide range of consumers.
Throughout the design process, the Global Consumer Design team faced numerous challenges. They had to defy the company's mindsets to propose new concepts like tilted knobs, integrated LED lights, and a full stainless steel shape. Manufacturing challenges also had to be considered, ensuring that the design could be realized without compromising quality or craftsmanship.
The project, which started in February 2010 in Monterrey and concluded in July 2012 in Celaya, was exhibited at the WOW (World of Whirlpool) Chicago show in September 2012. The design team worked tirelessly to create a product that not only met the design intent but also satisfied consumer needs and manufacturing requirements.
Extensive research was conducted to ensure that Dragon was user-centered in terms of interface and usability. The team conducted exploratory research on cooking tasks, food preparation, rituals, and cultural concerns in Mexican households. This research led to valuable insights that informed the design process and helped create a product that resonates with consumers on an emotional level.
Dragon's success was recognized with the Silver A' Design Award in the Home Appliances Design category in 2013. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. Dragon's unique features and exceptional design make it a standout addition to any kitchen.
Dragon is not just a gas range; it is a testament to the capabilities and skills of Mexican designers. By adding value to a global company through design that resonates with users and stakeholders, Dragon showcases the power of design to transform everyday experiences.
